En cuanto el receptor capta a traves de las antenas situadas alrededor del avión que esta reciviendo energia radar, se sintoniza automaticamente en esa frecuencia y comienza a comparar las señales que recibe, con otras obtenidas por ELINT (Electronics Inteligence) y almacenadas en una base de datos. Si como resultado de esa comparación las caracteristicas de la señal son las mismas que las del radar director de un sistema SAM-2 automaticamente se enciende una señal de alrma en el tablero del avión y el piloto comienza a oir en sus auriculares el tintineo producido por los impulsos del radar, tintineo que crece en tonalidad al pasar el radar Fan Somg de la fase de busqueda a la de seguimiento. Cuando esto sucedia, los pilotos sabian que estaban a punto de lanzarles un misil. A ese tintineo le llamaban "the SAM song"
