Lt Henry Doran RNVR es el marino que describe la hazaña del piloto de esta manera:
"As it was August it was daylight all round the clock. Early on there was an alarm and someone shouted "Look" and there was what appeared to be a U-boat on the surface. An aircraft took off and went into attack, strangely the U-boat did not dive. The pilot of the aircraft went in for the kill delighted at the thought of a DSC - which was the usual reward when an aircraft sank a U-boat. He dropped a depth-charge but it was badly aimed and missed - so he fired six rockets in his next run. Then there was a great water-spout and the object turned on its back floating - it was a whale!"

"Como era agosto, había luz del sol a todas horas. A primera hora hubo una alarma y alguien gritó "Mirad" y había lo que parecía ser un U-Boot en superficie. Una aeronave despegó y fue al ataque, extrañamente el U-Boot no se sumergió. El piloto fue a por él encantado de pensar en una Cruz de Servicio Distinguido - que era la recompensa habitual cuando un avión hundía un U-Boot. Lanzó una carga de profundidad pero apuntó mal y falló - asi pues disparó 6 cohetes en la siguiente pasada. Esta anectoda sucedio tras la destruccion del PQ17 en julio de 1942.
